Readers - I have been asked "What was the FIRST web widget ever created" - my thoughts rolled back to the original hit counters - but I am eager to hear your opinions. If you have any thoughts on the first widgets for the web - please let me know!

(Page 1)2. I would agree that traffic counters were some of the first widgets. Don't forget the clocks and weather widgets as well. They were pretty close after counters if I remember correctly.

3. Mike, I would agree that counter was the first mainstream web widget. That being said, in this discussion we assume that a widget is portable application that can be executed on different web sites. If, however, the widget definition is extended to include active content, like animated gifs, then we have to go a bit further back in time. This is not that crazy as many people consider badges to be a subclass of widgets.

4. Hi EveryBody Here...by Hooman words it is'nt an exact example but I want to remember "Mail Box Capacity Bar" as a primary Widgets that yahoo started using it from 4 0 5 years ago...and based on my favorite and business I think Flash Contents(Specially after flash 5) have represented the concept of widgets for a long time, for example I was surprised by a Cost-CAlculator in influxis.com about price of their services base on user Demands...and in this area finally by respect to Mike and his team we have UserPlane Comm Platform.

5. I would think it was any of the various web hit counters as your post suggests. To be more specific, I remember trying to get nph-header Perl script running the day Netscape announced the concept of animate GIFs. That would be circa 1994.
